Abstract: Abstract Suicide is a major cause of premature death among patients with schizophrenia. The schizophrenic patients who are more likely to commit suicide are young, male, and Caucasian, had never been married and have a good premorbid function, and a history of substance misuse and suicide attempts. Hopelessness, social isolation, awareness of illness, and hospitalization are also important risk factors for suicide in schizophrenic individuals. Deteriorating health with a high level of premorbid functioning, depression after a psychotic episode, recent loss or rejection, limited external support, and family stress or instability are other risk factors. Awareness of illness has been reported as a major cause of suicide for suicidal schizophrenic patients. Strategies to handle this increased insight are discussed.
