Title: Fertilization of High Yielding Forage Crops
Abstract: This chapter is concerned largely with the perennial forages. Forage is the most widely grown crop in the United States, and it is a major crop in all states. Of all the environmental factors, available moisture ranks high in its influence on fertilizer responses. Rainfall is adequate to obtain response to fertilizer in nearly all of the forage producing areas of the East. Quantities of nutrients absorbed by various forage crops vary with yield level, species, varieties within species, soils, climatic conditions and several other factors which are still obscure. Conflicts between practices needed for high yields and those required for top quality in forage crops are minimal. Fertilizer usage on forages country-wide has increased from 2,651,000 tons in 1954 to 3,763,000 tons in 1964-a 42 percent increase. Forage crops could be in for some radical changes in use and production.
