Title: Stability improvement of FDTD method for buried horizontal wires
Abstract: The paper investigates the stability of the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method based on the telegraph equations of transmission lines for buried horizontal wires. This kind of FDTD methods based on transmission line (TL) theory needs some closed form expressions for the ground impedance and ground admittance of buried horizontal wires (bare and insulated) for lightning or switching transient analyses. The stability of the original method greatly depends on the time domain responses extracted. In this paper, a group of time domain responses of the ground impedance or ground admittance can be extracted analytically by means of a correlation between the ground impedance and the ground admittance. By using the analytical technique, the accuracy and stability of this time domain solution is improved significantly. As a result, the application of this time domain algorithm can be greatly expanded beyond the modeling of common transmission lines.
