It was under his leadership that China undertook the ambitious economic reforms that have transformed China’s economy from an economic backwater into the second-largest economy in the world. But with the rapid growth has come new challenges: rampant corruption, increasing social unrest, rising levels of inequalities, the yearning for democracy, and the spread of ideas foreign and inimical to the perceived interests of the communist state.
