Title: Polyphenols from Pongamia pinnata (Linn.) Pierre in Metabolic Disorder
Abstract: Pongamia pinnata (Linn.) Pierre (Fabaceae) is distributed throughout India. The plant is rich in polyphenolic compounds. Pongamia pinnata showed presence of flavonoids, polyphenols and volatile oils. Different doses of leaves extracted from Pongamia pinnata possess cardioprotective activity. Hypolipidemic and antihyperlipidemic activity of Pongamia pinnata was observed due to the presence of flavonoids and other polyphenolic constituents. Standardized ethanolic extract of Pongamia pinnata (rich in flavonoids) produced significant antioxidant and antidiabetic activity. Pongamol and karangin are active polyphenols isolated from the fruits of this plant and showed antidiabetic activity. Hence, it is concluded that the Pongamia pinnata plant is useful in treating metabolic disorders.
