Abstract: Almost all organic chemicals such as fuels, polymers, or detergents are currently derived from fossil feedstock. Due to the foreseeable depletion of this resource much effort is put into the substitution of fossil processes with more sustainable productions. Fermentation from biomass is a very promising technique to produce high-value chemicals normally derived from oil or coal in a biological and ecology-minded manner. Therefore, microbial cell factories such as bacteria, yeast, or fungi can be employed and enable an economic production of building blocks for biomaterials.
