Abstract: Chromosome numbers and karyotypes were documented by detailed observations of mitotic chromosomes to clarify interspecific and intergeneric relationships in orchid taxonomy. Investigations of polyploidy and genome analysis made by observing chromosome behavior in meiosis may contribute to efficient breeding. In this paper, cytogenetical research on orchid breeding is summarized as follows: 1) cytogenetical evidence of intergeneric hybrids involving Cymbidium; 2) relationships between microspore morphology and sectional taxonomy in Phalaenopsis F 1 hybrids; 3) chromosome enumeration in Phalaenopsis hybrids and production of artificial polyploidy; 4) chromosome enumeration in Lycaste hybrids; and 5) observations of higher polyploidy and relationship between chromosome numbers and DNA content in Epidendrum hybrids.
