Abstract: Most researchers in university history devote some attention to libraries as an important element in an institution's achieving national recognition. This paper concentrates on the role of philanthropy, publications, and the library as critical elements in the University of North Carolina's emergence as a major national university from 1917 to 1950. The material presented here will form a part of the author's larger work on the university's history.
