Abstract: Nel 2010 e stata pubblicata a Roma la seconda edizione, riveduta e ampliata, di quello che viene considerato il piu ampio e soddisfacente studio mai condotto sulla lingua franca; un’espressione – quest’ultima – che ha da sempre affascinato gli europei (da secoli in cerca del “fantasma di una lingua che permetta, come per incanto, di superare tutte le divisioni”, pag. 11) e che anche per questo continua ad essere utilizzata impropriamente, per riferirsi a realta anche assai eterogenee fra loro, come il greco e il latino nel mondo antico, il russenorsk, l’inglese e l’esperanto in quello attuale, oltre ad una lunga serie di pidgin di ogni epoca, e perfino a situazioni che con la linguistica non c’entrano nulla. A gettare luce su cosa sia, al di la delle suggestioni finora a varie latitudini evocate, la lingua franca propriamente detta, ci ha pensato Guido Cifoletti, apprezzato linguista e nella fattispecie arabista dell’Universita degli Studi di Udine, da almeno un quarantennio interessato a questo tipo di parlata, che, nei secoli passati, prima che l’inglese e una certa anglomania invadessero il nostro continente, era molto diffusa da un estremo all’altro del Mediterraneo, ma che nel solo Nordafrica lascio delle tracce qualitativamente e quantitativamente in grado di giustificare l’allestimento di uno studio scientifico al riguardo degno di questo nome. Il volume, rivisto, integrato e in alcuni punti anche corretto rispetto all’edizione precedente, che risaliva a qualche anno fa, viene definito da Harro Stammerjohann, nella prefazione, “la piu completa descrizione e spiegazione della Lingua franca mai pubblicata”(pag. 6): e un’opera che ha il pregio di rappresentare la prima trattazione del fenomeno lingua franca esaustiva sotto ogni aspetto, senza mai rinunciare – com’e tipico dello stile dell’autore, sempre gradevole alla chiarezza espositiva, oggigiorno divenuta nell’ambito accademico cosa rara.
