Title: An-Other Voice: Young Women Dancing and Talking
Abstract: This paper is divided into two sections. The first section sets out the grounds for doing sociological research in the area of dance and gender. The second section explores some aspects of the relation between dance and gender which emerged from a nine months' study of a local community dance project in London which holds open dance classes and maintains a dance group. This research involved sitting-in on classes, filming and interviewing members of the dance class and Group. Particular emphasis in this study was given to interviewing a number of young women between the ages of 16 and 19 years. Because of the composition of the classes and the group and indeed, the character of the project, I was able to draw on young women with varied experience and interest in dance.
