Abstract: Onychomycosis is defined as an infection of the nail unit by fungi. Four clinical types of onychomycoses are recognized by the manner in which the nail plate is invaded. A combined therapy with elimination of the nail by surgical extraction or a chemical onycholysis, a short systemic antifungal therapy and a topical treatment until the healthy nail has grown is recommended.
