Factors such as it’s massive population, rapidly evolving societal structure and still developing economy make China’s situation unique. The elderly Chinese person faces a number of difficulties, with an ageing body and reduced physical strength on the one hand, and reduced adaptability to their social surroundings and diminishing > social support. Therefore, it is now more important than ever to evaluate the quality of life and social support in elderly Chinese people. At present, tools for evaluating quality of life and social support in the elderly can be divided into those used in China and those used internationally, without either China or the international community taking advantage of what the other has to offer. Better understanding of these assessment tools could fundamentally enhance and improve the quality of life and social support in elderly Chinese people, and may have a wider impact on the economy and strengthen the nation.
