Abstract: The artistic merits of the poems written by Bernard O'Dowd are analysed. His use of old-fashioned idiom and romantic imagery, the influence of Nietzsche in his writing, his metaphysical imagination and his ability to write poems suitable for being read out like an incantation are discussed.
