Abstract: Publisher SummaryThis chapter takes a look on wireless network security and describes the steps taken to use it securely. Wireless networks make connecting to the Internet and other devices easy and convenient. The freedom they provide is very liberating, but that freedom comes at a price when it comes to security, and extra precautions need to be taken to keep wireless data secure. The chapter provides an overview of the wireless protocols and technology, and takes a look at what is required to secure home wireless network to keep unauthorized users out of the network. The chapter delineates the fundamental steps needed to protect wireless network, such as changing default passwords and SSIDs, disabling the broadcasting of SSID, or filtering access to the wireless network by media access control (MAC) address. The chapter also discusses some other security concerns that are unique to public wireless hotspots, such as ensuring that the wireless network is a legitimate one and not a rogue hotspot set up to steal information. Finally, the chapter emphasizes that using a virtual private network (VPN) for communications and utilizing Web-based e-mail can help in improving security and protecting information while using public wireless networks.
