Title: A Confirmatory Factor Analysis of the Leadership Attitudes and Beliefs Scale - III
Abstract: Wielkiewicz (2000) developed the Leadership Attitudes and Belief Scale - III (LABS-III), a scale to measure college students’ attitudes and beliefs about hierarchal and systemic leadership. The benefit of this scale is that it assesses attitudes and beliefs of college students without the necessity of prior leadership experience. The scale was developed based on Allen, Stelzner, and Wielkiewicz's (1998) theory of ecological leadership. Wielkiewicz validated the LABS-III using two groups, students at a Catholic college and students at a traditional public university. This study investigates the attitudes and beliefs of students from a conservative, private college, dissimilar in overall orientation and background from the two groups used by Wielkiewicz. A confirmatory factor analysis showed the Leadership Attitudes and Beliefs scale loaded on two dimensions, hierarchal and systemic thinking. This study finds that Wielkiewicz’s scale has content validity but lacks discriminate validity with some questions but it does load on two dimensions, as designed. It is recommended that additional studies be done with larger samples.
