Title: Primary care nurse practitioners and the interface with secondary care: a qualitative study of referral practice
Abstract: This study was initiated out of the first author’s disquiet, as a nurse practitioner, at objections raised to nurse referral to consultants on poorly defined grounds. Group and individual interviews were conducted with six hospital consultants, ten GP registrars and seven nurse practitioners. Six of the nurse practitioners were making referrals to consultants, and all of the consultants had experience of receiving referrals from nurse practitioners. All the nurse practitioners had medical mentors in their practices and reported that all their role developments had been negotiated, planned and supported. Referrals to secondary care were made with the support of their employers.
