Title: Follicular Dendritic Cells and Dendritic Cell Nomenclature
Abstract: In the 10 years since the last nomenclature committee on dendritic cells met (Tew, Thorbecke and Steinman, J. Reticuloendothelial Society 31:371, 1982), considerable evidence has accumulated supporting the concept that Langerhans cells, interdigitating cells, and veiled cells are the same cell in different stages of maturation. It also appears that the follicular dendritic cell (FDC) is quite different from these dendritic cells. In short, it seems to me that we are dealing with two distinct dendritic cell types and that this concept should be clearly stated. I have a suggestion on how this might be done in Table 1. The designation “T cell associated dendritic cell” or “B cell associated dendritic cell” in Table 1 does not mean to imply that these interactions are absolute and exclusive. Rather, it is clear that one type of dendritic cells typically interacts with T cells and the other typically interacts with B cells.
