Title: CALCIUM PYROPHOSPHATE CRYSTAL SYNOVITIS WITH ARTICULAR CHONDROCALCINOSIS (“PSEUDOGOUT” SYNDROME)
Abstract: The features of 17 cases of calcium pyrophosphate crystal synovitis with articular chondrocalcinosis are presented and discussed. One patient had coexistent gouty arthritis. The disorder is uncommon and usually misdiagnosed on clinical grounds. Minimal calcification of joint structures is easily overlooked, especially in the presence of marked degenerative joint disease, with which there is a strong association. The Importance of routine diagnostic synovianalysis of joint effusions is emphasized. The characteristic crystals found in this disorder are illustrated, and the features by which they are identified and differentiated from other crystals are discussed.
