Title: Stickstoffbasierte Kraftstoffe: eine “Power‐to‐Fuel‐to‐Power”‐Analyse
Abstract: Wie sehen die Kraftstoffe der Zukunft aus? Das Resümee aus der hier vorgestellten Untersuchung zur Energiebilanz von sieben repräsentativen Kraftstoffen auf Basis von Kohlenstoff und Stickstoff: Es ist eine faszinierende Vorstellung, dass unser Energiesystem künftig Stickstoff aus der Atmosphäre als Speicher für nachhaltig aus Wasser produzierten Wasserstoff verwenden könnte. Fossile Kraftstoffe, die über hunderte Millionen Jahre entstanden sind, bilden die Basis für unsere moderne Zivilisation: Sie ermöglichen den bemerkenswerten Wohlstand unserer Gesellschaft und beeinflussen das Leben von Milliarden Menschen. Doch sie wirken sich auch verheerend auf Umwelt und Klima aus. Der stetig wachsende Abbau und die Verbrennung von fossilen Kraftstoffen führen zu erheblichen Emissionen von CO2 und anderen Schadstoffen in die Atmosphäre. Der Weltklimarat (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) hat jüngst berichtet, dass anthropogene Ursachen mit einer Wahrscheinlichkeit von 95–100 % für den Klimawandel verantwortlich sind.1 So wurde 2015 die höchste mittlere globale Temperatur über Land und Wasser im Zeitraum von 1880–2015 verzeichnet, und damit der bisherige Rekord aus dem Jahr 2014 erneut übertroffen.2 Die Zunahme der globalen Treibhausgas-Emissionen erhöht die Notwendigkeit für die Entwicklung und den Einsatz CO2-neutraler Energietechnologien. Eine zentrale Herausforderung für unsere Gesellschaft im 21. Jahrhundert ist daher die Etablierung eines sicheren, ökonomischen und nachhaltigen globalen Energiesystems. Die Entwicklung synthetischer Kraftstoffe auf globaler Ebene ist dabei ein Schlüsselelement für saubere Energietechnologien.3, 4 Voraussetzung hierfür ist unter anderem die Entwicklung effektiver und kostengünstiger Technologien für die Herstellung von Wasserstoff aus Meerwasser. Sobald diese Technologien verfügbar sind, wird die chemische Speicherung von Wasserstoff notwendig, da Wasserstoff selbst eine sehr niedrige volumetrische Energiedichte hat und zudem Sicherheitsrisiken und hohe Kosten für eine globale Transportinfrastruktur mit sich bringt. Die großtechnische chemische Speicherung von Wasserstoff kann in Form von Kraftstoffen erfolgen, in denen Kohlenstoff oder Stickstoff als Träger für den Wasserstoff dienen. Kohlenstoff und Stickstoff lassen sich aus CO25, 6 bzw. N27-9 aus der Atmosphäre herstellen. Während die großtechnische Abtrennung von rund 400 ppm CO2 aus der Atmosphäre10 eine komplexe technische Herausforderung darstellt,11 sollte die gute globale Verfügbarkeit von Stickstoff (78.09 Vol.-% in trockener Luft bei Normalnull)12 die großtechnische Herstellung von Ammoniak und seinen Düngemittelderivaten als Kraftstoffe ermöglichen, wobei letztere – bildlich gesprochen – auch als Düngemittel für das Energiesystem dienen könnten. Trotz dieses Potenzials fehlten stickstoffbasierte Kraftstoffe in früheren Bewertungen künftiger Energiespeicher.13 Im Folgenden untersuchen wir daher die Frage, wie künftig Wasserstoff aus erneuerbaren Quellen effizient gespeichert werden könnte. Das Hauptziel ist dabei der Vergleich zweier alternativer Wege der stationären Speicherung von Wasserstoff: Kohlenstoff- und Stickstoffchemie. Für diesen Vergleich wird ein geeignetes Gütemaß beschrieben. Schließlich stellen wir experimentelle Arbeiten zu einem Vertreter der stickstoffbasierten Kraftstoffe vor.14-21 Methanol kann auch weiter in andere Energieträger umgewandelt werden. Ein Beispiel ist seine Dehydrierung zu Dimethylether (DME). DME ist ein exzellenter Dieselersatz, da er weitgehend ohne Rußbildung verbrennt, eine hohe Cetanzahl aufweist und für die Selbstzündung bei niedriger Temperatur geeignet ist.33 Aus Methanol lassen sich auch weitere flüssige organische Wasserstoffträger synthetisieren.34 Die Stickstoffwirtschaft, in der stickstoffbasierte Kraftstoffe als Energiespeicher und zur Erzeugung von Hochdruckgasen dienen, wird als künftiges System vorgeschlagen. Der einfachste stickstoffbasierte Kraftstoff ist Ammoniak, das die Basis für eine Ammoniakwirtschaft sein könnte.7, 35, 36 Die kommerzielle Herstellung von Ammoniak aus seinen Elementen gelang 1913 im Haber-Bosch-Verfahren.37, 38 Ammoniak ist heute die weltweit am zweitmeisten hergestellte anorganische Chemikalie.39 Dabei werden derzeit etwa 80 % des erzeugten Ammoniaks zur Herstellung von Düngemitteln verwendet, zumeist für Harnstoff und Ammoniumnitrat (AN).40 Die Herstellung von Ammoniak mithilfe nicht konstant verfügbarer erneuerbarer Energien ist mit heutigen Verfahren bereits möglich.48, 49 Darüber hinaus wurde auch schon die Umwandlung von Ammoniak in eine Reihe weiterer stickstoffbasierter Kraftstoffe wie AN und AN-basierte Mischungen,50-56 wässriges Hydroxylammoniumnitrat,57, 58 Ammoniumdinitramid59-62 und wässriges AN gemischt mit Ammoniumhydroxid oder Harnstoff14 vorgeschlagen. Während die Methanolwirtschaft für die Bereiche Energieerzeugung und Chemie im breiteren Sinn interessant ist,63, 64 ist es die Stickstoffwirtschaft für die Energieerzeugung und die Düngemittelindustrie. Im Rahmen dieses Essays wird allerdings nur der Energiesektor betrachtet. Die Reaktionen (R1) und (R2) sind insofern vergleichbar, als in beiden Fällen 3 mol Wasser pro 1 mol Edukt (CO2 bzw. N2) benötigt werden. Doch landen bei der Umwandlung von 1 mol CO2 in 1 mol Methanol nur 2/3 des Wasserstoffs im Produkt. Dagegen erhält man 2 mol Ammoniak pro 1 mol N2, ohne dass Wasserstoff verloren geht. Das für die Herstellung der kohlenstoffbasierten Kraftstoffe benötigte CO2 kann aus der Atmosphäre oder aus anthropogenen Quellen gewonnen werden. Anthropogene Quellen haben höhere CO2-Anteile, mit typischen Werten von 5–15 Vol.-% CO2.27, 65 Da die direkte Gewinnung von CO2 aus Milliarden kleiner, dezentraler Einheiten wie Autos unpraktikabel scheint,66 sind die zwei aussichtsreichsten CO2-Quellen Abgase (aus der Industrie und von Kraftwerken) und die Atmosphäre.67 Die Atmosphäre ist eine große, aber zugleich herausfordernde CO2-Quelle. Sie ermöglicht den Zugang zu den Emissionen aus allen großen und kleinen Quellen (“direct air capture”).5, 6, 65-69 Um die chemischen Speicher auf gleicher Basis zu vergleichen, betrachten wir hier vorrangig die Abtrennung von CO2 und N2 aus der Atmosphäre. Die Abtrennung von CO2 aus anthropogenen Quellen, d. h. aus Abgasen, wird aber auch kurz angesprochen werden. Eine Abschätzung der praktisch notwendigen Energiemenge für die Gewinnung von CO2 aus der Atmosphäre ermöglichen energetische Analysen und Technologiestudien; dabei wurden kürzlich 6.6 GJ pro Tonne CO2 ermittelt (Wert aus der Literatur70 und mithilfe von Gleichung (SE1) in den Hintergrundinformationen in Arbeitsäquivalente umgerechnet). Der Energieaufwand für die kryogene Luftzerlegung wird dagegen auf 0.22 GJ pro Tonne N2 geschätzt.12 Hierbei ist bemerkenswert, dass der für die praktische Abtrennung von N2 aus der Luft berechnete Energieaufwand sogar niedriger ist als der theoretische Mindestenergiebedarf für die Abtrennung von CO2 aus der Luft. Methan kann über die Sabatier-Reaktion hergestellt werden.71 Es ist die einfachste Form eines kohlenstoffbasierten Kraftstoffs, d. h. das kleinste Molekül mit den kleinsten funktionellen Einheiten. Die einfachste oxidierte Variante von Methan, Methanol, wurde bereits sehr gut untersucht und ist ein wichtiger alternativer Kraftstoff. Es ist der einfachste kohlenstoffbasierte Kraftstoff, der bei Umgebungsbedingungen flüssig vorliegt. DME ist wiederum der einfachste Ether, der aus MeOH gewonnen werden kann. Sowohl MeOH als auch DME wurden – wie oben erwähnt – bereits als alternative Kraftstoffe für eine Reihe von Anwendungen vorgeschlagen. Ammoniak ist die einfachste Form eines stickstoffbasierten Kraftstoffs und zugleich der Ausgangsstoff für viele weitere stickstoffbasierte Verbindungen. Durch Oxidation von Ammoniak nach dem Ostwald-Verfahren72 lässt sich Salpetersäure herstellen, die wiederum mit Ammoniak zu AN reagiert. Jährlich werden Millionen Tonnen AN hergestellt, das vor allem als Düngemittel eingesetzt wird.73 Wichtig ist die Tatsache, dass wässrige Lösungen von AN chemisch stabil und nichtexplosiv sind und sich somit sicher transportieren, verladen und lagern lassen.15, 74 Die beiden auf AN basierenden wässrigen Kraftstoffe AAN und UAN sind Monotreibstoffe, da sie das Oxidations- und das Reduktionsmittel enthalten. Daher ist kein zusätzliches Oxidationsmittel wie Luft für ihre Verbrennung erforderlich [Reaktionen (R4) und (R5)]. Im Kraftstoff AAN ist Ammoniumhydroxid das Reduktions- und AN das Oxidationsmittel, während bei UAN Harnstoff das Reduktionsmittel ist. Harnstoff ist eine stickstoffhaltige organische Verbindung, die jährlich im Millionen-Tonnen-Maßstab produziert und ebenfalls hauptsächlich (>90 %) als Düngemittel eingesetzt wird.75 AHU ist hingegen kein Monotreibstoff, da er nur das Reduktionsmittel enthält; hier wird also ein externes Oxidationsmittel wie Luftsauerstoff für die Verbrennung benötigt [Reaktion (R3)]. Es lassen sich weitere synthetische stickstoffbasierte Kraftstoffe vorschlagen, z. B. wässrige Lösungen von Ammoniumcarbonat, Ammoniumacetat, Ammoniumcarbamat, Ammoniumformiat, Harnstoff oder Methylamin. Aus Gründen der Übersichtlichkeit beschränken wir uns hier auf die zuvor genannten Kraftstoffe. Stoff- und Energieflüsse des PFP-Systems. Systemgrenzen sind durch die gestrichelten Linien markiert. Für die Analyse wurde eine Reihe sinnvoller Annahmen getroffen, die in Tabelle S1 erläutert werden. Alle Energiegrößen wurden in äquivalente Arbeit umgerechnet, um einen konsistenten Vergleich unterschiedlicher Energiegrößen zu ermöglichen [Gl. (SE1)]. Der Wirkungsgrad der Verbrennung wurde für alle Kraftstoffe anhand des Wertes von Methan abgeschätzt, da Methan ein etablierter und optimierter Kraftstoff für Gasturbinen ist (Tabelle S2). Der Energiebedarf für die Verteilung der Kraftstoffe wurde für eine Strecke von 1600 km berechnet (Tabelle S3). Arbeiten zur CO2-Nutzung legen nahe, dass eine solche Strecke eher eine Obergrenze repräsentiert.67, 76, 77 Doch selbst für diese Obergrenze ist der Einfluss der Verteilung auf den Gesamtwirkungsgrad gering (siehe unten). Die berechneten PFPAtm-Indices liegen im Bereich von 12 bis 35 % (Tabelle 1). Die für die Berechnung in Gleichung (G2) benötigten Energiemengen sind in Tabelle 1 dimensionslos angegeben, um den Vergleich zwischen den Kraftstoffen zu vereinfachen. Die dimensionsbehafteten Größen finden sich in Tabelle S4 (d. h., in GJ pro Tonne Kraftstoff). Für die dimensionslosen Größen wurde durch die Energiedichte des jeweiligen Kraftstoffs dividiert. Dividiert man Zähler und Nenner in Gleichung (G2) ebenfalls durch die Energiedichte des Kraftstoffs, zeigt sich, dass der PFPAtm-Index das Verhältnis des Verbrennungswirkungsgrads zur Summe der dimensionslosen Energiemengen darstellt. Der dimensionslose Energieaufwand für die Wasserelektrolyse ist wiederum besonders hoch für die zwei wässrigen AN-basierten Kraftstoffe. Dies ist eine Folge der stöchiometrisch bedingten hohen Verluste an Wasserstoff in der Kraftstoffsynthese (Tabelle S5). Die Ammoniumkomponente in den wässrigen AN-basierten Kraftstoffen ist ein hervorragender chemischer Wasserstoffspeicher, da ihre N-H-Bindungen denen in Ammoniak ähnlich sind und die Flüssigkeit zugleich sicher gehandhabt werden kann.15, 74 Allerdings ist zu berücksichtigen, dass in der großtechnischen Herstellung Nitrate aus ammoniakbasierter HNO3 entstehen.72 Somit werden auch Wasserstoffatome für die Herstellung der Nitrate verbraucht, stehen also nicht mehr für den eigentlichen Kraftstoff zur Verfügung. Für AN ergibt sich, dass 67 % des Wasserstoffs im Kraftstoff landen, für AAN und UAN sind es 75 bzw. 67 % (Tabelle S5). Die Wasserstoffnutzung ist bei Methan und DME mit 50 % am geringsten, da in der Sabatier-Reaktion 8 Wasserstoffatome pro CH4-Molekül verbraucht werden (Tabelle S5). Die relativ hohe Energiedichte dieser beiden Kraftstoffe führt trotzdem dazu, dass der dimensionslose Energieaufwand für die Wasserstoffherstellung niedriger ist als bei den AN-basierten Kraftstoffen (Tabelle 1). Ammoniak ist unter den betrachteten Kraftstoffen der einzige, der wegen der hervorragenden Effizienz des Haber-Bosch-Verfahrens39 100 % des Wasserstoffs nutzt (Tabelle S5). Tabelle 1 ist zu entnehmen, dass der Energiebedarf für den Transport der Kraftstoffe nur einen geringen Einfluss auf die Berechnung des PFP-Index hat. Der PFPAtm-Index ist für Ammoniak am höchsten (35 %), gefolgt von Methan, MeOH und AHU, die alle einen Wert von 27 % erzielen. DME hat einen Index von 23 %, und AAN und UAN erreichen Indices von 14 bzw. 12 % (Tabelle 1). Hierbei muss beachtet werden, dass der PFPAtm-Index direkt vom Wirkungsgrad der Verbrennung abhängt [Gl. (G2)]. Dies gilt zwar für alle Kraftstoffe, ist aber besonders relevant für die AN-basierten Monotreibstoffe, für die der verwendete Wirkungsgrad für die Verbrennung konservativ angesetzt wurde, da für die Verbrennung keine Gaskompression notwendig und eine Verbrennung bei hohen Drücken in der Größenordnung von 10 MPa möglich ist.14, 16 Dennoch wäre der PFPAtm-Index dieser Kraftstoffe nur konkurrenzfähig zu denen der kohlenstoffbasierten Kraftstoffe, wenn die Verbrennung den Bereich des Carnot-Grenzwerts erreichte (Abbildung S1 d). Weitere Forschung zur genaueren Bestimmung der Verbrennungswirkungsgrade dieser Kraftstoffe ist daher notwendig. Tabelle 1 und 2), wobei die Verbesserung maximal moderat ist (4–5 Prozentpunkte). Bei AHU und UAN ist sie geringer, da diese Kraftstoffe nur wenig Kohlenstoff enthalten (ca. 5 bzw. 3 Gew.-%). Die Indices von Ammoniak und AAN sind unverändert. In einer Sensitivitätsstudie wurde die Signifikanz der gefundenen Unterschiede in den PFP-Indices untersucht (Tabelle S7, Abbildung S1). Die Werte für Methan, MeOH und DME hängen stärker vom Energiebedarf für die CO2-Abtrennung ab als die für AHU und UAN, da sich der Kohlenstoffgehalt deutlich unterscheidet. Alle stickstoffbasierten Kraftstoffe zeigen eine ähnliche Abhängigkeit vom Energiebedarf für die N2-Abtrennung aus der Atmosphäre. Der PFP-Index stickstoffbasierter Kraftstoffe hängt stärker vom Energiebedarf für die Wasserelektrolyse ab als der kohlenstoffbasierter Kraftstoffe, wobei jedoch für Methan ebenfalls eine starke Abhängigkeit gefunden wurde. Daher werden künftige Effizienzsteigerungen bei der Wasserelektrolyse zu einem relativen Vorteil von stickstoffbasierten Kraftstoffen führen, denn Methan und AHU dürften dann ähnliche PFP-Indices erreichen, die höher sind als der für MeOH (Abbildung S1 e). Mit einer einzigen Ausnahme ändert sich die Reihenfolge der sieben ausgewählten Kraftstoffe nicht, wenn die eingesetzten Parameter variiert werden (Abbildung S1). Diese Ausnahme ist der Energieaufwand für die Abtrennung von CO2 aus der Luft: Wenn dieser von heutigen 6.6 auf Werte unter 6.3 GJ pro Tonne CO2 sinken würde, stiegen die PFPAtm-Indices von Methan und MeOH auf beinahe 30 %, während der Wert für AHU bei 27 % bliebe (Abbildung S1 a). Neben dem im PFP-Index erfassten Wirkungsgrad der Umwandlung sind natürlich weitere Faktoren für die Bewertung synthetischer Kraftstoffe wichtig und müssen bei der Auswahl berücksichtigt werden. Solche Faktoren sind z. B. die technisch-ökonomische und ökologische Bewertung der Kraftstoffe über ihren Lebenszyklus sowie Aspekte der Infrastruktur, der Wechselwirkung und Kompatibilität mit anderen Sektoren (Chemie- und Düngemittelindustrie), der Toxizität, der Sicherheit und der chemischen Stabilität. Forschungsarbeiten der jüngeren Zeit zu wässrigen UAN-Lösungen, einem stickstoffbasierten Modellkraftstoff, wurden ausführlich in einer Übersichtarbeit vorgestellt.88 Die Umsetzbarkeit der kontinuierlichen Verbrennung von UAN wurde nachgewiesen.14-16 Es wurde gezeigt, dass der Kraftstoff sicher gehandhabt und gelagert werden kann und bei Umgebungsbedingungen chemisch stabil ist.15 Die thermischen Eigenschaften des Kraftstoffs wurden sowohl bei Umgebungsdruck wie auch unter Hochdruckbedingungen untersucht,17, 18 und seine Verbrennungschemie wurde aufgeklärt.14, 17-20 Eine Reihe von Katalysatoren wurde zur Abgasnachbehandlung vorgeschlagen und charakterisiert.89 Des Weiteren wurden die Korrosionseigenschaften bei Reaktionsbedingungen untersucht.21 Ein Kraftstoff aus wässriger UAN-Lösung hat eine für stationäre Energieerzeugung akzeptable volumetrische Energiedichte von 4.4 GJ m−3, was komprimiertem Erdgas bei 10 MPa entspricht. UAN kann als Kraftstoff theoretisch einen umweltfreundlichen Abgasstrom erzeugen, der aus 73.0 % H2O, 21.6 % N2 und 5.4 % CO2 (auf Molbasis) besteht [Reaktion (R5)]. Es wurde nachgewiesen, dass eine Druckerhöhung während der Verbrennung den Schadstoffanteil signifikant reduziert und den N2-Umsatz erhöht (Abbildung 2). Bei einer Verbrennung bei 25 MPa und einem Kraftstoff-Volumenstrom von 10 mL min−1 erreicht der N2-Umsatz 99.9 % (Abbildung 2 B), während die gesamten NOx-Emissionen (d. h. NO2, NO und N2O) 127 mg MJ−1 betragen (entspricht 1.85 mmol NO pro 1 mol AN).14 Dieser Wert liegt erheblich unter dem Grenzwert von 290 mg MJ−1 (entspricht 4.22 mmol NO pro 1 mol AN), den die US Environmental Protection Agency für neue stationäre Gasturbinen fordert.90 Die Emissionen von CO und NH3 unter diesen Bedingungen sind 8 bzw. 17 mg MJ−1.14 Die diskutierten Ergebnisse wurden ohne Einsatz eines Katalysators erzielt, doch es wurde bereits gezeigt, dass sich Schadstoffe, insbesondere NH3, durch einen Katalysator weiter reduzieren lassen.88, 89 Die Verbrennung vielversprechender stickstoffbasierter Kraftstoffe (Tabelle 1) sollte daher weiter erforscht werden. Die großtechnische Speicherung und Distribution von Wasserstoff, der künftig wohl als Massenprodukt aus Wasser statt Erdgas gewonnen werden wird, wird wahrscheinlich in Form chemischer Kraftstoffe geschehen, wobei Kohlenstoff und/oder Stickstoff als Träger für den Wasserstoff dienen werden. Wir haben hier daher kohlenstoff- und stickstoffbasierte Kraftstoffe in Bezug auf ihr Potenzial als chemische Wasserstoffspeicher für stationäre Energieanwendungen energetisch verglichen. Hierzu wurde eine geeignete Bewertungsgröße eingeführt, der Power-to-Fuel-to-Power(PFP)-Index, und anhand dessen ausgewählte Kraftstoffe auf Basis aktueller Untersuchungen aus der Literatur bewertet. Dabei wurden zwei Fälle betrachtet: a) Gewinnung von CO2 und N2 aus der Atmosphäre (PFPAtm) sowie b) Gewinnung von CO2 aus Abgasen und von N2 weiterhin aus der Atmosphäre (PFPAbgas). Sieben synthetische Kraftstoffe wurden untersucht: Methan, Methanol, Dimethylether (DME), Ammoniak sowie wässrige Lösungen von Ammoniumhydroxid und Harnstoff (AHU), Ammoniumhydroxid und Ammoniumnitrat (AAN) und Harnstoff und Ammoniumnitrat (UAN). Falls CO2 aus der Atmosphäre verwendet wird, erzielt Ammoniak einen PFPAtm-Index von 35 %, und Methan, MeOH und AHU haben ähnliche PFPAtm-Indices von etwa 27 %. DME folgt mit einem PFPAtm-Index von 23 %, und die AN-basierten Monotreibstoffe AAN und UAN erreichen PFPAtm-Indices von 12–14 %. Hierbei ist zu beachten, dass der PFP-Index stark vom Wirkungsgrad der Verbrennung abhängt, der für die AN-basierten Kraftstoffe konservativ zu 47 bzw. 48 % geschätzt wurde. Daher ist eine genauere quantitative Untersuchung der Verbrennung von AN-basierten Kraftstoffen sehr wichtig. Wenn das CO2 aus Kraftwerksabgasen gewonnen wird, erzielt Ammoniak noch immer den höchsten PFPAbgas-Index mit 35 %, und MeOH, Methan, AHU und DME folgen mit 32, 31, 28 bzw. 25 %. Ammoniak zeichnet sich durch den geringsten Energiebedarf für die Gewinnung der Rohstoffe aus, selbst für den Fall, dass CO2 aus Abgasen gewonnen wird. Der spezifische Energieaufwand für die Wasserelektrolyse ist für AN-basierte Kraftstoffe am höchsten. Der spezifische Energieaufwand für die eigentliche Kraftstoffherstellung ist besonders niedrig für die einfachen Moleküle Methan und Ammoniak. Wir konnten zeigen, dass eine Stickstoffwirtschaft, in der Wasserstoff chemisch an den natürlichen, unbegrenzt verfügbaren Träger Stickstoff in Form von ungiftigen und sicheren stickstoffbasierten Kraftstoffen gebunden ist, energetisch realisierbar ist, d. h., dass die Umwandlungskette neuartiger stickstoffbasierter Kraftstoffe energetische Wirkungsgrade erreicht, die denen kohlenstoffbasierter Kraftstoffe ähneln. Die Einbindung stickstoffbasierter Kraftstoffe stellt somit eine Bereicherung – oder bildlich gesprochen – ein Düngemittel für das künftige Portfolio unserer Energietechnologien dar. Schließlich beschrieben wir, dass wässrige Lösungen von UAN als stickstoffbasiertem Modellkraftstoff sicher in der Handhabung sind. Sie verbrennen stabil und mit signifikant niedrigeren NOx-Emissionen, als die Grenzwerte der US Environmental Protection Agency es zulassen. Es ist eine faszinierende Vorstellung, dass unser Energiesystem künftig Stickstoff aus der Atmosphäre als Speicher für Wasserstoff verwenden könnte, der wiederum nachhaltig aus Wasser gewonnen wird. Alon Grinberg Dana erhielt 2010 seinen B.Sc. in Biochemical Engineering am Technion, und 2015 promovierte er bei Prof. Grader im Grand Technion Energy Program (GTEP). Derzeit ist er Postdoc am Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In seiner Doktorarbeit untersuchte er die Verbrennung stickstoffbasierter Kraftstoffe, und seine Forschungsinteressen liegen an der Schnittstelle von Chemieingenieurwesen und angewandter Energietechnik, insbesondere auf den Gebieten alternative Kraftstoffe und rechnergestützte Chemie. Oren Elishav erhielt 2014 seinen B.Sc. in Biochemical Engineering am Technion und begann dann in Prof. Graders Arbeitskreis sein Masterstudium. Er beschäftigt sich mit stickstoffbasierten Kraftstoffen und interessiert sich vor allem für die Charakterisierung des Zündverhaltens und die Herstellung alternativer Kraftstoffe. André Bardow studierte an der RWTH Aachen und an der Carnegie Mellon University. Seinen Doktortitel erhielt er 2004 von der RWTH. Von 2005 bis 2006 war er Postdoc an der ETH Zürich und danach Assistant und später Associate Professor im Department für Prozesse und Energie der TU Delft. 2010 kehrte er an die RWTH zurück und übernahm den Lehrstuhl für Technische Thermodynamik. Seine Forschung zielt auf die Integration des Lebenszyklusgedankens in den Entwurf nachhaltiger Systeme für die Energie- und Chemietechnik. Gennady E. Shter studierte am Kuibyshev Polytechnischen Institut, heute Staatliche Technische Universität Samara (Russland), und promovierte 1977 am Kurnakov Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry der Russischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Ab 1979 war er Associate Professor an der Kuibyshev Medizinischen Universität. Seit 1991 ist er Senior Research Fellow am Chemical Engineering Department des Technion. Gideon S. Grader studierte in Berkeley und promovierte 1986 am Caltech. Danach war er technischer Mitarbeiter bei den Bell Laboratories. 1989 ging er ans Technion, an dem er seit 2000 Professor für Chemieingenieurwesen ist. Von 2007 bis 2015 leitete er das GTEP. Seit 2016 ist er Dekan des Wolfson Department of Chemical Engineering am Technion. In seiner Forschung beschäftigt er sich mit Sol-Gel-Keramiken als Katalysatoren und der Verbrennung alternativer Kraftstoffe.
