Title: Attached Scientific Computers in Structural Analysis
Abstract: The design and analysis process is explored in terms of its requirements for user decision-making and interaction. This is presented as a three-phase procedure: (1) the engineer developing a model of the structural system, (2) analyzing the system response to applied forces and boundary conditions, and (3) interpretation of results. The procedure is then analyzed as a cyclic or interative process where structural models and designs are refined and reanalyzed until acceptable results are achieved. Characteristics of the engineering problem are investigated as they apply to the computing environment. Such aspects as memory, precision, computational power, floating-point arithmetic, and high-level programming languages are examined.
