Title: Cultural Representations in Algerian English Textbooks
Abstract: Culture, whether taught explicitly or implicitly, permeates many aspects of foreign language teaching. Teachers, then, need to be cognizant of how to approach culture and how to teach it in the language classroom. In Algeria, where exposure to the English language is rare, teachers rely heavily on text-books as the source of both language and culture for their teaching. This underscores Riazi's (2003: 52) argument that 'textbooks play a very crucial role in the realm of language teaching and learning and are considered the next important factor in the second/foreign language classroom after the teacher'.
