Title: Interpersonal Communication Skill/Competence
Abstract: Abstract Interpersonal communication skill/competence is a complex concept that broadly describes communication that is both effective and socially appropriate. However, many different theoretical approaches tend to define efficacy and appropriateness in different ways, thus this entry explores perspectives related to message processing (expectancy theories, attribution theory), message production (goal–plan–action and hierarchical theories), and social relationships (relational dialectics theory). Each perspective is explored for its contribution to the field of understanding interpersonal communication skills and competence.
