Abstract: The author concludes that in practice it is convenient to oppose slow-acting barbiturates by rapid-acting ones. Poisoning with slow-acting barbiturates tends to provoke prolonged comas fertile in respiratory, infectious and sometimes cardiocirculatory complications. Renal treatment is especially effective in these cases. Poisoning with fast-acting barbiturates, which was less common in the author's series, is the most dangerous form, since the rapid action of the drugs leads to an acute depression of the autonomic functions. Thanks to a metabolisation by the liver, the coma is generally not long-lasting and purification treatment of little importance. Meticulous supervision is essential in the two types of poisoning. The prognosis of the barbiturate comas is excellent. In this series there were no deaths and no cases of secondary sequelae.
