Title: Walking on thin ice of translation of terminology in legal settings
Abstract: Abstract Translation in legal settings is an extremely complex process. Failure to adjust the target text to the communicative needs of the translation recipient is a serious source of problems. It often results from the existence of sets of terminology used only in one legal system in a given language variety. When rendering translations under the pressure of deadlines, translators frequently lack time to carry out extensive and time-consuming terminological inquiries and comparisons. Therefore, there is a need for the creation of parametrised terminology banks for the purpose of interlingual legal communication. The research hypothesis is put forward that parametrisation of legal terminology in respect of semantic and systemic relations at the intralingual and interlingual level may be a useful tool in organizing terminology for the purpose of legal translation. The scope of the research encompasses selected legal terminology from: Polish, British, American and European Union legal systems. The research methods used include: (i) the analysis of comparable texts, (ii) the method of axiomatization of legal linguistic reality, (iii) the terminological analysis of research material, (iv) the concept of adjusting the target text to the communicative needs and requirements of the community of recipients as well as (v) the analysis of pertinent literature.
