Title: Managing the Spaces of Freedom: Mid-twentieth-Century Youth Work
Abstract: This chapter considers aspects of English youth work (as a mode of informal education) roughly between 1940 and 1960. This period marks the beginning of an incipient professionalisation conditional upon youth workers' attempts to manage youth cultural and social transitions. As educational spaces existing beyond school (Stimson, 1948), urban and rural youth clubs and organisations were sites constructed by youth workers to encourage young people to develop their capacities for responsible citizenship. Youth organisations were, as now, 'spaces of power' (Newman, 2012, p.61) in which youth workers aimed to produce particular educational outcomes.
