Title: Establishment of a Limited Rumen Microflora in Gnotobiotic Lambs
Abstract: Two gnotobiotic lambs were dosed orally with 8 species of rumen bacteria. All 8 species became established in the rumen of one of the inoculated lambs, and at least 6 species were established in this organ in the other lamb, with an accompanying production of volatile fatty acids. A caecal flora also became established. The inoculated lambs grew better than uninoculated gnotobiotic lambs and their rumen papillae were better developed.
