Abstract: There are many approaches to understanding identity, although dominant in critical, cultural, and scholarly contexts are those that understand identity to be constructed or constituted through available discourses and communication methods. Today, that includes the realm of digital Web 2.0 communication. This has complexified the ways in which we can understand the cultivated forms of identity: interactivity, networking, and social networking are all significant factors that change how we perceive the self and its cultural markers. This article provides an overview of the ways in which identity is constituted in off-line and online communicative environments. The article begins with a brief summary of the emerging and current theories of identity and subjectivity; an analysis of the ways in which identity has been discussed as fluid in text-based virtual reality Web 1.0 contexts as well as the shortcomings of such views, and the way in which Web 2.0 sites, emphasizing social networking, present us with new ways in which to think about the production and performance of identity.
