Title: Experimental Research on Switching Process of Sequential Turbocharging System with Unequal-Size Turbochargers for V-Type Marine Diesel Engine
Abstract: A sequential turbocharging(STC) system with two unequal size turbochargers for Model TBD234V12 Marine Diesel Engine was designed and tested on the engine operating with stable marine screw propulsion characteristics. Two fixed engine speeds for the 3-phase STC system switching were determined according to the lowest engine brake specific fuel consumption principle. In order to improve the stability in the switching process of diesel engine, different switching delay times were tested. The best switching delay times were obtained based on the analysis of the correlative parameters in switching processes.Experimental results show that improper switching delay time wound lead to the turbocharger unstability:the controlled turbocharger may appear gas flow backwards with too short delay time, and compressor surge with too long delay time.Reasonable switching delay time can avoid these problems.
