Abstract: Relevance Theory provides a cognitive basis for the existence of discourse markers.Discourse markers are a linguistic device which a speaker adopts to convey his or her intentions clearly.Based on the Relevance Theory, discourse markers reveal the relation between the discourse markers and the context or the contextual hypothesis, and perform the function of pragmatic marking in communication. The aim of this paper is,from three aspects, namely, the purpose of using discourse markers, the constructive process of cognitive context and the ways of expression,to demonstrate that discourse markers can constrain and guide a listener's choice of his or her cognitive environment while processing the speaker's utterances and help him or her find the optimal relevance between the speaker's utterances and the listener's cognitive environment so as to help him er to achieve the maximum cognitive effect with minimum mental efforts.
