Title: The Academic Mission of Cultural Philosophy in the New Millennium
Abstract: The 21st century is here to stay and it is time for researchers of cultural philosophy to come up with newer thinking and academic achievements in the new century. For this reason, the writer proposes the academic mission for cultural philosophy in the new century. The first part of this article sets out to elaborate on the scientific definition and characteristics of cultural philosophy from the perspectives of comparisons of object of study and methodology of the discipline, maintaining that cultural philosophy is a philosophy rather than culturology and that cultural philosophy research is a philosophical enterprise. The second part of the article holds that the essential attribute of culture is life. As a pattern system of all life of the humankind, culture has its intrinsic self-sufficiency and mandates. In the culture of different cultures, philosophy is not necessarily the most significant ideological formations that play key roles. Therefore, philosophy is a derivative and appendix of culture. It is the true fundamental work for philosophical research to explore the cultural attributes of philosophy. And the third part of the article mainly discusses the cultural character of the object of study of philosophy --- being and ideas, pointing out that philosophical ideas are in actuality cultural ideas. The abstraction of philosophy is in effect the coincidence of cultures. Cultural philosophy should research into the possibilities of philosophical conflicts and mergence between cultures. This urgent and brand new enterprise first requires a construction of contemporary basic philosophical ideas for the Chinese culture.
