Title: Clinical observation on treatment of anemia in hemodialysis patients by combined L-carnitine and erythropoietin
Abstract: Objective To observe the curative effect of combination therapy with L-carnitine and erythropoietin in hemodialysis patients with anemia. Methods 50 patients suffered from uremia were equally divided into the observation group and the control group in accordance with random double blind method. The normal therapy of two groups were the same, all patients were received subcutaneous injection with 100~150 U/kg erythropoietin once a week. The dosage of erythropoietin was reduced till the value of haematocrit increased by 30%, but the control group was injected via vein with L-carnitine 20~50 mg/kg every time after hemodialysis. The treatment course lasted 12 weeks. Results Compared with the observation group, the levels of hemoglobin and haematocrit were significantly increased in control group (P0.01). After 12-week treatment, the dosage of erythropoietin in control group was reduced significantly while no remarkable change in observation group. No statistic significance was found in blood pressure′s change between two groups (P=0.182). Conclusion L-carnitine may reduce the dosage of erythropoietin and enhance the curative effect of erythropoietin, which can improve anemia.
