Title: On how to distinguish ironic utterances from nonirony
Abstract: Verbal irony is a ubiquitous form of language, used frequently in everyday discourse. In recent decades, the study of ironic utterances has attracted interest from an increasing number of linguists, psychologists, rhetoricians, and other scholars.Among the representative irony theories, such as Sperber Wilson's traditional theory,Clark Gerrig's pretense theory,Salvatore Attardo's inappropriateness theory, etc.,there exists an outstanding problem they share: they do not provide a sufficient explanation of how people judge whether an utterance is ironic or not.In an effort to overcome the difficulties these theories have, the present paper makes use of Utsumi's implicit display theory to attend this issue.
