Title: Influence of cationic monomer DMC on synthesis and properties of styrene-acrylate emulsion
Abstract: With cetyltrimethylammoniumbromide(CTAB) as emulsifier, azobisisobutryamide chloride(AIBA) as initiator, styrene(St),butyl acrylate(BA) and methyl methacrylate(MMA) as main comonomers, cationic styrene-acrylate emulsion with core-shell structure was prepared by seeded emulsion polymerization.Meanwhile, cationic monomer [2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] trimethyl-ammonium chloride(DMC) and functional monomer acrylamide(AM) were added. It was found that the Tg of core and shell of the obtained emulsion polymer were-17 ℃(theoretical value-27 ℃) and 65 ℃(theoretical value 77 ℃) respectively by DSC.Inter-diffusion and permeation may be occurred for certain compatible homopolymer chain segment located in the core-shell interface, which resulted in the Tg difference between actual and theoretical values.TEM photos showed that emulsion particles had clear core-shell structure, and the regularity of core-shell structure was affected by the addition of cationic monomer DMC.With the increase of DMC and AM,the particle size and viscosity of cationic styrene-acrylate emulsion became larger, and ξ potential of the emulsion particle increased firstly and then decreased. When DMC was 2%(wt) of total monomers,ξ potential of the emulsion reached up to the maximum,45.1 mV,which meant that at this condition the emulsion system was very stable.
