Title: Fabrication and microstructure of TiC/Ti - xY composites by melting-casting
Abstract: In order to study the effects of yttrium on the microstructure of the TiC/Ti composite, the Ti - xY matrix composites reinforced with TiC particles were fabricated by melting-casting. SEM, XRD and an energy spectrometer were employed to analyze the morphology, phase, and composition. The formation of TiC was discussed. The morphology of TiC in composites was also observed. The results showed that the composites were composed of Ti and TiC phases and the TiC in composites were dispersed uniformly in the matrix without contamination and a reaction zone on its interface. The morphology of the primary TiC particles was dendrite. And the fine stripe eutectic TiC containing yttrium separated out. The primary dendrite TiC became finer, arm spacing increased, and fine stripe eutectic TiC increased as the yttrium increased.
