Title: Antibiotic effects of amoxicillin and erythromycin against Streptococcus pneumoniae in vitro
Abstract: Objective To study interactions between amoxicillin and erythromycin against Streptococcus pneumonia, and certify whether the bactericidal action of erythromycin against S.pneumoniae. Methods The minimum inhibited concentration(MIC) were determined by Agar twofold dilutions, minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) were determined by replica plating. The static and dynamic interaction of amoxicillin and erythromycin were tested by checkerboard microdilution and time-kill curves respectively. Results The range of amoxicillin MIC was≤0.004~2 mg·L-1 and that of erythromycin was 0.008~≥256 mg·L-1in all isolates. The range of amoxicillin MBC was ≤0.004~4 mg·L-1,and that of erythromycin was 0.016~≥256 mg·L-1. The ratio of amoxicillin MBC and MIC was 1~2,and that of erythromycin was 1~4. The MIC values of the most isolates when amoxicillin combined with erythromycin were similar or slightly decreased than those of amoxicillin or erythromycin alone. The range of FICI was 1~2.Conclusion Erythromycin possesses bactericidal action against S.pneumoniae in vitro. It was indifferent when amoxicillin and erythromycin were combined together.
