Title: A Cognitive Mechanism Study on Metaphor:From Conceptual Metaphor Theory to Conceptual Blending Theory
Abstract: In this article, the author first reviews Lakoff and Johnson's conceptual metaphor theory and Fauconnier's conceptual blending theory, then analyzes the cognitive mechanism of metaphor with these two theories. Finally, the author compares their similarities, differences and complementarity in metaphorical meaning construction with these two theories. It shows that their similarity lies in the mapping mechanism, while the difference lies in the process of the mapping. Conceptual metaphor theory lacks explanation to the new metaphorical meaning, but the conceptual blending theory can cover this shortage. The two theories complemented and combined with each other will make the cognitive mechanism of metaphor developed and improved.
