Abstract: Functional theories of translation emphasize that the translators should employ the aim of the target text in the target culture to formulate translation strategy and the methods.The development of the theory has three stages,which are text type,translation action and the skopos.The theory of each stage has its instructional influence on the translation practices.The paper gives a brief introduction to the functional theories of translation and takes an example to analyze that how the theories guide the translation.
