Title: DRIVING FORCE,CHARACTERISTICS AND STRATEGIC ORIENTATION OF URBANIZATION IN RESOURCE-BASED AREAS: A CASE STUDY OF SHANXI PROVINCE
Abstract: The exploitation of mineral resources has dual-effects on regional urbanization. On one hand,it promotes local economic growth and industrial structural evolvement, therefore promotes the urbanization process. On the other hand, because of the high dependence on the mineral resources,resource-based areas have many problems such as the unrealistically heightened industrialization and urbanization levels, the decentralized economic factors and urban systems, the weak city functions and so on.In the context of the transition of resource-based economies,it argues that the urbanization should implement the strategy of improving quantity and quality synchronously in order to promote the coordination between urbanization and new industrialization, implement the strategy of centralized urbanization in order to build efficient and intensive urban structure, implement strategy of cluster-based urbanization in order to make space for new industry cluster and innovative growth, implement the strategy re-urbanization of mining city in order to make industrial space for the resourcebased industrial city in the economic transformation.
