Title: Numerical model for one-dimensional dam-break sand flowing and sediment
Abstract: This paper is aimed at presenting a 1-D dam break flow and sediment numerical model based on our research. For our re- search purpose,we have adopted both the finite volume method and finite difference method to dispatch the sand of the 1-D unsteady flow and sediment. As is known, the main hazard leading to the dam- break for a reservoir in its initial impoundment period is the flooding influence due to the clean water discharge. However, for a reservoir in its operating period, the main concern comes from the deposition and the erosion of dam itself. The case study we have taken here is based on the deposition data of Xinji reservoir that has been operating for a number of years, whose flood has been simulated by using our model after its dam break. Our analysis has been done based on the influence of the sediment on the flood submergence and river bed de- formation as compared to the simulation of the dam break flow when the reservoir was at its initial impoundment. The result of our analysis has enabled us to find that the sediment section concentration tends to amount to its maximum value by following the appearance of maximum flowing volume. It has thus demonstrated that the discharge flow tends to carry large amounts of sediment deposited in the reservoir to the downstream. The elevation of river bed downstream would thus be changed due to the amounts of the sand flow and sediment of dam- break. At the same time, the composition of the bed would be coars- ened when the river bed is scored and refined when the sediment de- posits on the river bed, which tends to vary the roughness and in turn influences the downstream flow and water level of dam-break.
