Title: Comparison of sotalol and bisoprolol in the maintenance of sinus rhythm after electrical cardioversion of persistent atrial fibrillation
Abstract: Objective To compare the efficacy and safety of sotalol and bisoprolol in the maintenance of sinus rhythm after electrical cardioversion of persistent atrial fibrillation. Methods Patients(n=116) were compared and divided into sotalol or bisoprolol group at random.Follow-up clinical evaluation was performed for 1 year,ECG was examined at half-month intervals after cardioversion. Results After a follow-up of 12 months,43.1% of patients in sotalol group and 39.6% in bisoprolol group still maintained sinus rhythm(P0.05).Lifethreatening proarrhythmias(torsade de pointes tachycardias) occurred in two patients(3.4%) in sotalol group. All happened within 24h after initial dose.None was found in the bisoprolol group. Conclusion Sotalol(5 mg/day) and bisoprolol(160 mg/day) are both effective in the maintenance of sinus rhythm, and bisoprolol is safer than sotalol.
