Title: Empresses from Longcheng and Imperial Court Politics in the Northern Wei Dynasty
Abstract: Several empresses in the Northern Wei Dynasty, from the families of Chang, Feng and Gao respectively, all came from, or had ancestral relations with Longcheng. They collaborated and exerted influence in selection of empresses, and manipulated the inner court. Each of them managed to gather some imperial in-laws (wai qi), eunuchs, valets and powerful ministers around her to form a political group during the reign of four successive emperors in the middle of the Dynasty, and they played a role in court politics for 64 years. For that reason, they deserve special attention in the study of the history of the Northern Wei Dynasty.
