Abstract: Constantine, the first politician who changed the fate of Christianity, worked out a series of policies and measures that supported the development of Christianity, establishing it as the state religion of the Roman Empire. A view prevailing among historians holds that the triumph of Christianity in the Roman Empire signifies a complete conquest of the Christian culture over that of the Romans. This view, in effect, denies the big role played by Contantine in the history of Christianity. Under the historical conditions of the time, Christianity, faced with suppression from generations of rulers, prejudice and misunderstanding from the ordinary people, wouldn't have experienced the historic change of its status in the Roman Empire, if not anywhere else, without the strong support from the despot Constantine.
