Title: Using SWAT model to simulate the discharge of the Xiliugou in Inner Mongolia
Abstract: This study used the distributed hydrological model and SWAT to simulate the monthly runoff in the Xiliugou basin which is one of the ten ephemeral streams in Inner Mongolia. Model parameters were calibrated and validated with SWAT-CUP and SUFI-2 algorithm, and sensitivity and uncertain analysis were performed for improving model performance. The results indicated that the coefficient of determination( R2) was 0. 87 and Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient( Ens) was 0. 85 in calibration period while R2 and Ens were 0. 72 and 0. 65,respectively,in validation period. Generally, the model performance criteria were quite satisfactory. However, the SWAT was not effective to simulate the discharge during spring floods and dry periods. The reason may be that Xiliugou basin is located in an arid and semi-arid region with a relatively low runoff coefficient and quite unevenly distributed rainfall. It is proposed that the SWAT runoff generation mechanism in arid and semi-arid regions needs to be further investigated.
