Title: Wang Shizhen and the copyright of Jinpingmei
Abstract: It is not considered a creativity at all to dwell upon the authorship of a book, for the author of Jinpingmei has long be clarified since Ming Dynasty. As is known, all the 12 versions of Jinpingmei originate from Wang Shizhen, who has been described in various anecdotes to relate to Jinpingmei. It is admitted that Yujiaoli and Jinpingmei are written by the same author. If Yujiaoli is written by Wang Shizhen, Jinpingmei must be written by Wang Shizhen as well, by analogy. Furthermore, the criticism of the current affairs in Jinpingmei is recorded in much the same way in the Ming chronicles. According to all the historians who know him well, Wang is a good advocator of stylistic imitation, in depicting such plots as funerals, family tragedies, and psychological oddities. Hence, the copyright of Jinpingmei is so indisputable that any attempt like Wu Han's can prove in vain.
