Title: The cause of 38 endodontic retreatment and the clinical management
Abstract: Objective To study the cause of endodontic retreatment and the aspects paid attention in clinical management. Methods The data of 38 teeth (31 patients) which received endodontic retreatment during July, 2004 to August, 2005 were collected and analyzed. Results The causes of endodontic retreatment are underfilled (18 teeth), overfilled (18 teeth), uncompleted resinifying therapy (13 teeth), uncompleted pulp mummification (4 teeth), missing of the second mesiobuccal canal (MB2) in maxillary molars (1 teeth). Among the 38 teeth, there were 34 teeth from which the original canal filling could be removed, the original canal filling could not be removed from 3 teeth, and perforation happened in 1 tooth. Conclusion Endodontic revision was a feasible method for the management of endodontic failure. High attention should be paid to the removal of original canal filling from the tortuous canal, in order to avoid the perforation. Attention should also be paid to the finding and the treatment of the second mesiobuccal canal (MB2) in maxillary molars.
