Title: Effect of acupuncture on expression of NF-κB and IκB in cerebral multi-infarction rats
Abstract: Objective: To observe the influence of acupuncture on the protein expression of nuclear factor-κB(NF-κB) and inhibitor nuclear factor-kappa B(IκB) in hippocampus of multi-infarct dementia(MID) rats and explore the mechanism of acupuncture on MID.Method: The model of MID in rats was made by injecting homogeneous emboli into the internal carotid artery. The MID rats were randomly divided into model, acupuncture and sham-acupuncture groups.Meanwhile, normal and sham-operated rats were used as control. The protein expression levels of NF-κB and IκB in hippocampus of all rats were evaluated by immunohistochemistry method following a three-week period of acupunctural treatment.Result: A signi?cant increase in the protein expression of NF-κB was observed in hippocampus of rats in model group when compared with normal rats.Meanwhile, significant increases in the protein expression of NF-κB and IκB were found in hippocampus of rats in the acupuncture group when compared with the model rats. Conclusion: Acupuncture could exert neuroprotective effects and improve the abilities of learning and memory of MID rats by increasing the protein expression of NF-κB and IκB.
