Title: On the Literary Concepts Expressed in Sh- li Yuyao
Abstract: Sh- li Yuyao embodies XIONG Shi- li′ s theoretical observations and summaries featured by both his inheritance and development of ancient Chinese literary thoughts as one of the founders of modern neo- Confucianism. His literary thoughts find expression in such 4 aspects as 1), the academic differentiation and analysis concerning reason and sense as one side and textual research as another and the criticism leveled at the textual research study from the perspective of the school of reason and sense; 2), his taking it as his literary concept of utility that literary works are to serve the established doctrine and that one is to attend to the state affairs and gear his study to practical use; 3), the definition of terms such as literary works′ natural simplicity and the mettle in reason and sense and the elucidation of the relationship between these terms and 4), the comparison between Eastern and Western poetry and between ancient and present poetry.
