Title: A Two-Year Study of 40% Chlorhexidine Varnish on the Prevention of Dental Caries.
Abstract: Objective:The purpose of this study was to assess the preventive effects of 40% Chlorhexidine (CHX) varnish on dental caries.Methods:1250 children aged 3~7-year-old from 3 kindergartens and one school were assigned to a CHX varnish group, a Sandarach and a control group. In the CHX varnish group and in the Sandarach group, all children received a 40% CHX varnish application and Sandarach varnish application every 6 months respectively. The study was followed up for two years. Results:A statistically caries-reducing effect on dental caries in primary teeth and permanent teeth was found in the CHX varnish group, the reduction rate of dental caries was 45.5%, 44.80% and 40.42% respectively in three age groups, compared to the data of the control group. There is not significant difference between the Sandarach group and the control group (P0.05).Conclusions:Six-monthly application of 40% CHX varnish has caries-reducing effect on dental caries in primary teeth and permanent teeth.
