Title: Root Growth of the Seedlings from Different Clone Lines of Pecan(Carya illinoensis Koch)
Abstract: This experiment, conducted in Jiande,Zhejiang was mainly to study the growth of pecan seedlings and roots affected by different clones. The results showed that seedling height, root diameter, root length, root surface area and the dry weight of roots were highly significantly different with the size of the seed sown, and root volume, dry weight of the shoot and root/crown ratio were also different. The greatest basal diameter was 1.11 cm,or 1.33 times the smallest;the greatest height of the seedlings was 51.96 cm,or 1.65 times higher than the shortest;the longest root was 1 490.01 cm,or 2.11 times the shortest;the biggest root surface area was 500.51 cm2,or 2.02 times bigger than the smallest;and the biggest root volume was 16.12 cm3,or 2.24 times bigger than the smallest. The above indexes tended to decline with decreasing seed size.It is,hence, concluded that in seed sowing,we should choose bigger seeds so as to cultivate quality seedlings.
