Title: Expression of Fos protein in rat periaqueductal gray following heat stress
Abstract: Objective To investigate the expression of Fos protein in rat periaqueductal gray following acute heat stress (HS) . Methods Rats were exposed in the cabin at different temperature (24℃, 34℃, 38.5℃ or 42℃) with 60% humidity for 1 h. After rats were perfused, the brains were removed. Immunohistochemical staining was used to detect the expression of Fos protein. Results In control rats, a few Fos-like immunoreactive (Fos-LI) nuclei were identified. After heat stimulation at 34℃, the number of Fos-LI nuclei increased. At 38.5℃, the number of Fos-LI nuclei increased abruptly and peaked. At 42℃, the number of Fos-LI nuclei decreased significantly. Fos-LI nuclei mainly are located in the periaqueductal gray, especially in ventral lateral area. Conclusion The neurons in periaqueductal gray may be involved in modulating heat stress.
